Winux, possibilities?
Since DEC is a partner with MS in developing NT, NT contains some VMS code. Since DEC also has Digitial Unix and has offered Linux as an alternative to Digital Unix for some Alpha systems, it may very well be possible that some Unix code might end up in NT in the near future.
There are also rumors that IBM wants to buy out Sun to get control of Java and Solaris, and mix Solaris with its OS/2 operating system. IBM Execs denied knowledge of such a plan, but could it be a last ditch effort to drive Sun's stock up after Linus called Java dead, and support for Java going down from many companies after Sun sued Microsoft, and Netscape getting afraid of getting sued next so it dropped the "100% Java compatable" from its product and let someone else write the JVM for Netscape?
Microsoft already has a new OS, it is called Windows CE, and while designed for hand-held and embedded computers, it has a very small footprint and isn't as crash-prone as Windows 9X. It also supports the WIN32 API, all MS has to do is make a desktop version of CE and offer users a choice. One catch, CE doesn't support WIN16 or DOS apps, but still you would sacrifice compatability for reliability.
But can MS bring back Xenix, or use Unix to enhance its ailing OS problems? Or will it use the license it has with Apple to use Apple technology like NeXtStep/Rhapsody/MacOS X to enhance Windows? :)
