The full Monty

Every now and again, we get an e-mail that leaves us scratching our heads. Montgomery Gabrys of the Apple Doomsday Clock wrote, "If you're not going to provide balanced reporting, I can help." He offers his web site's look at "dark side of Apple.". First of all, we're an advocacy page. We've never said we provide balanced reporting. That would be as weird as a doomsday clock without a clock (where is the freaking clock, Montgomery?) Secondly, if he'd actually read any of the content, he would know we make a distinction between Apple the company and Macintosh the platform. If you believe current rumors, Macintosh might wind up in the hands of Oracle or Motorola and Umax. Furthermore, we've criticized Apple more throughly and for a greater length of time than Mr. Gabrys.
Reviewing his rationale for offering the clock, he comes across as a frustrated, disappointed idealist. One of his main complaints is that people feel passionately about Macintosh, rather than viewing it dispassionately as a tool. But that's the nature of love: people getting passionate about stuff other people may not approve of. It's arbitrary, not rational, at least to onlookers. I may not be crazy about Da Bears, Hanson, or Tori Spelling, but I'm not going to deny the validity of other people's obsessions. Montgomery believes that by finding fault he can shake people loose from their infatuation. Ask any father who's tried that with their teenage daughter whether that works. So we don't mind providing a link to his site. We doubt it will rock any Macintosh afficiando's foundations. - mac_one@mailexcite.com

Of course I was probably over-reaching in trying to get his attention with the dark-side bit, what the hell. The rest he makes a good case for - except the idea that loving a thing rather than a person is somehow healthy. I like the idealist part though. I thought I was just a cynic.
